What addiction really is
Addiction is a treatable, chronic medical disease involving complex interactions among brain circuits, genetics, the environment, and an individual's life experiences. People with addiction use substances, or engage in behaviours, that become compulsive and often continue despite harmful consequences.
Where the addiction is the type created by life experiences, rather than alcohol or substance abuse, it can be helped by suggestion therapy to reframe past events, an approach closely related to Timeline Therapy and analytical therapy.
Why addictions take hold
Almost every addiction is the mind trying to meet a need, to feel comfort, excitement, escape or relief from something painful. The behaviour works in the short term, so the subconscious learns to repeat it, again and again, until it becomes automatic and feels beyond your control. Fighting the behaviour head-on rarely works, because the underlying need is still there.
How hypnotherapy helps
We work with the subconscious to resolve the need that the addiction has been meeting, and to find healthier ways to satisfy it. At the same time we break the automatic pattern itself. As both shift, the compulsion loses its grip and freedom becomes genuinely possible.
